Semantic Issues ofIdiomatic Expressions Translation

Wewill now take a close look at some peculiarities ofidiomatic expressions. An important point which must be underlined is that idioms are not only colloquial phrases, as plenty of people think. They may be found in formal style and in slang. They may be found in verse or in the language of Shakespeare and business letters.

What, then, is an idiom? We can say that an idiom is some quantity of phrases which, if found together, mean something special from the individual words of the idiomatic expression when they are placed separately. Other idioms are absolutely regular and logical in their grammatical aspects and vocabulary. Because of the peculiar features of certains idiomatic expressions, we have to study the idiom as a whole and we sometimes cannot amend any part of it (except maybe, only the grammatical form of the verb).
English is very rich in idioms. In fact, it is hard to speak or write English language without using idioms. An English native speaker is sometomes not aware that he is using an idiom; perhaps he does not even realize that an idiom which he applies is grammatically incorrect. A non-native learner makes the correct use of idiomatic English one of his main goals, and the fact that some idioms are illogical or grammatically wrong causes him difficulty. Only careful study and exact learning will help.
It cannot be explained why a particular idiom has developed an unusual arrangement or choice of phrases. The idiom has been fixed by long usage as is sometimes understood from the vocabulary.
